SPECIFIC EVALUATION TECHNIQUES
SPECIFIC EVALUATION TECHNIQUES: The overall evaluation strategy was described in at the beginning of this chapter. At the top of the model is the wider system, which means the organisation (industry) for the training context and the wider system is the society for the educational context. We do not proceed to evaluate the overall wider system, for a particular training course, as it is not worth doing. We confine to the particular course for evaluating the students and the course - we take overall instructional objectives, detailed instructional objects for the units and each lesson. We also use specific instructional exercises process. The use of tests for the purposes is familiar to all instructors and students. As one time or other, all of us have been students, and some of us become teachers.
The written tests and performance tests for cognitive objectives and psychomotor domain respectively have been stressed earlier in this book at many places. Written tests whose results can be reduced to numerical scores are measures of quantitative techniques. The general method of evaluating products or performance is essentially similar, regardless of the particular product of performance to be evaluated. In order to keep in mind, some kind of a list of objectives is needed, to guide evaluation.
The list is a prepared checklist of statement relating to behaviour traits, performance in some area or a product of some performance. Each statement is checked to indicate the presence or absence of a trait. This is often used in evaluating trainees’ interests, attitudes etc.
A rating scale is a device by which the opinion /judgment concerning a trait can be systematised. This is an improvement over the checklist. While a checklist simply records that something has happened, a rating scale adds another dimension how much happened or how will it happen. Rating scales are judgments or opinions and indicate the degree or the amount.
Ancedotel record is an informal device used by the instructor to record behaviour of trainees as observed by him from time to time. It is an objective description by the instructor of a significant occurence or episode in the life of the trainee. These records are useful for evaluating outcomes in the area of personal and social adjustment.
