THE NEPHROTIC SYNDROME
This complication is uncommon. Marked oedema is its main feature and, along with it, heavy protein loss in the urine. The prognosis is a little better than in other varieties of chronic renal disease. Because of the heavy protein loss (albumin), the serum proteins tend to be low. It may be helpful to replace some of the heavy protein loss.
The neprotic syndrome may arise from many causes. In addition to the heavy albuminuria (in excess of 5.0 g per day), hypo−albuminemia, hypercholesteremia and hyperlipidemia are present. If the cause can be identified, treatment of the cause improves the maternal and fetal prognosis. The treatment is the same as in the non−pregnant condition. The.pregnancy itself is to be managed as in the other conditions already discussed.
